Gas Saving Tips
 

Anybody got some gas saving tips on their dsm?

I was reading an article on when driving around town with windows down and ac off gives better gas mileage and while driving on the highway with windows up and ac on saves gas. Has anybody tested this theory on their dsm to see if it's true?

But seriously, turning down the boost if you're using the car as a daily driver helps a lot. Also, make sure your air/fuel system is clean and working properly. i.e. air filter, etc. Also depends on how you drive the car I guess. If you boost often, you're going to use more gas, and vice versa. And as far as A/C goes.. it uses gas no matter what. The motor hast to work a little more since there is a pulley for the A/C, which must use more fuel. I tend to save a decent amount of gas when I don't use A/C. Hope that helps?

Windows up / no ac = more gas saving tips. Less wind resistance.

Didn't someone post up gas saving tips awhile ago back when hurricane katrina hit or so?

buy a old 5-speed toyota corolla
1.5L mitsu mirage

both get 40+ MPG and they are nice to ride in

how about 58MPG? most motorcycles have a hard time giving you those numbers!

In the next year or so, I am going to build an electric car, its not going to be pretty, but at least I can stop buying gas.

I dont have ac period. so i have an anti overheat button. car starts getting hit, hit the button and the fan goes on. That was all fine and dandy until i came to my sences and just used dsmlink to keep the fan always on. :)
In my GST i get like 28mpg, im pretty happy about that because the auto gsx would have been lucky to get 10mpg :)

Just buy a 3cyl Metro, I average about 48 mpg.
The only thing that sucks about driving a Geo is all the chicks just want you for your car. ;)

Keep you foot off the gas. Driving style will make a huge difference on a turbo car. I have ridden with a lot of people who can't accelerate slowly from a stop or cruise at a constant speed. Any time you get near 0 psi or above, you are going to use a lot more gas not just because of the increased load/power, but also because the car will come out of closed loop and run much richer A/Fs.

I was getting around 26-27mpg when I daily drive Mara's Talon AWD to work. The car had snow tires on it too, I switched to her normal tires, hopefully that will add another mpg or 2 and then I am going to do some lean burn ECU tuning. It has 2G pistons in it, which help gas mileage over the 1G low compression. If you have a 1G, you could run an EPROM ECU and put in some code to turn off the O2 sensor and actually run leaner than 14.7 under cruise to save gas. You could do the same with a standalone like the AEM.

My brother got a Honda insight to get rid of the gas problem. He gets 60mpg.

Here's more for you guys, specially prem gas is $3.27 + nowadays.

Tip #1

Always buy gas at the coolest times of day. Early in the
morning or late evening are your best bets. Gas pretty much
expands and contracts based on temperature. Basically, it
takes less gas to fill up during the coolest time of day
than it does the hottest.

Tip #2

I know we've said this before but we can't stress enough how
important it is to have the proper amount of air in your tires.
If you're not keeping up with this, You are losing money.
It's as simple as that. It's proven that doing this one thing
can save you as much as a few hundred dollars a year!

Tip #3

Drive a little slower. Believe it or not, driving at 65 mph
versus 75 mph can save you as much as 10% on your fuel bill.

Tip #4

Fouled spark plugs, a dirty air filter or clogged fuel filter
will all affect your gas mileage. Have all of these checked
every time you get an oil change and have them changed if
necessary. All will contribute to a more efficient running
engine.

Tip #5

The shortest way to your destination may not always be the
cheapest way. The more stops and starts you make, the more
gas you are using. That's why the fuel economy is always
better on the interstate and highway. Take the route with
the least amount of stops and starts, even if it's a few
miles longer. It will pay off in the long run.

Tip #6

Consider trading in that gas guzzler for a more fuel efficient
vehicle. It's obvious gas prices will not be coming down
anytime soon, if ever. If you drive 12,000 miles per year,
the difference between a car which gets 15 mpg versus a car
which gets 30 mpg is $1200 per year! (Based on $3.00 per gallon).

Oil change can make a pretty good difference. i drive my dad's tundra and changing oil 3000-4500 miles is pretty good on the gas, anything over 5000 miles and it's eating like a V12

Fuel tuning for anyone with an AFC or similar. I used to get 28mpg in town with my GSX with a 20G, VPC and 550's. I drove it like a Geo and being able to run much leaner than the factory tune reaps big rewards. I also maintained a speed +/- 2mph without using cruise control so I'm hardly using gas since I'm all freeway between work and home, minus a few stoplights.

And for those considering trading in your gas guzzler for something better, a bit of advice from the dealer. Obviously I'd rather have you come and buy a car from me, but reality is that it costs more to trade your car in on something better on gas than it does to just eat the higher gas prices on your current whip. You might get 10 mpg better mileage with a Civic right now, but figure what it would cost you to get that car considering the price hike fuel efficient cars are at currently. Spending $2-3K extra for a car to save a couple of bucks per tank would take quite a while to make up. Look at the big picture.

i heard if u have a bov and jus as long u drive without the bov goin off u be driving okag mpg. but that could jus be a urban myth
