Exhaust Studs

So I am finally swapping my locked 14b with a 16g, and I have run into a couple problems:

a stud is broken off inside the head.

and several studs are stripped.

believe it or not, I didnt do it, the previous owner did, and I almost knew that this was going to happen when he told me he replaced the manifold "because it was cracked" it seems nobody knows how to use a torque wrench.

so, can I drill and tap the 8mm stud holes to 10mm?

what is the best way of going about this?

I could take the head off the car and bring it into a machine shop....it would be annoying as hell, but I could do it.

i'd bring it to a machine shop, i hate using the drill on delicate things.

I think taking it to a machine shop would be the best idea also, the only trick now is to take the head off without having to re-do the timing, it involves making a jig, Rick Shinley told me about it a while ago, seems like a "good" idea, cant wait to try it.

Drill down the center of the broken stud and use an eazy out. Before you start wrenching on the easy out make sure to heat the head with a torch. Even a MAPP gas torch will do. You should be able to get it out that way. IMO, taking the head off should be the last resort.

Re: Exhaust Studs

Well, I got the head off, the intake valves are green and the exhaust valves are yellow, looks like this car had a bad head gasket at one point in its life. Anyways, the head is in the shop now getting helicoiled! Woot!
