Assembling motor question

I got my 2g 7 bolt motor back from the machine shop last week. Basically all they had to do was cut the crank .010", hone it, put new balance shaft bearings in and hot tank it. Everything else was excellent.

Anyways, when installing the crank back in it, I thought I heard that you are supposed to have the head bolted on it first, then install the crank and girdle, torque to spec and then remove the head. Otherwise if you don't, you can distort the mains if you don't have the head bolted on before you install the crank. I can't find where I read this but can some of you guys that have built numerous 4g63's please tell me if I should do this?

Thanks.

Re: Assembling motor question

The head acts like a torque plate and is available easily compared to a torque plate. It wouldnt be a bad idea to bolt the head to the block and torque it down.

I always use a Torque plate when assembling and machining motors that I build.

Hey Thanks, I will do that. Just reuse my old headgasket and torque it down. Then install the crank and girdle.

I appreciate the info.
