changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Well I finally did a boost leak test and I found I had a pretty major boost leak where my throttle body connects with my intake manifold. So I got some new gaskets and went to town. After the gaskets were in and everything was cranked down I did another boost leak test just to make sure. Sure enough, there is that very same big leak in that very same spot. I was planning on taking it apart again and putting a layer of RTV on the throttle body, but I thought I would get some other opinions first. And if I do use RTV, should I wait for it to dry on the throttle body and then clamp it down? Or should I just slap some on there and crank away? I don't like boost leaks :(

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
If you do use RTV, torque it down right after applying it then let it cure for 24 hours before starting your car.

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
A new mitsubishi gasket does not leak when properly installed, I would double check the installation/other options....there are alot of places where it can leak on the throttle body, spray with soapy water to see for sure

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
User error.
He had it installed incorrectly but its fixed now... I hope... :p |
Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Jakes right...unfortunatly. I put it back in right this time with a lil rtv. I'll boost leak test it in approx 2 hrs

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Actually, I fixed the gasket and RTVed it and she still leaks a little. Conclusion we came to at db is that the throttle body shaft is leaking a little. After throwing the car on the dyno and laughing at my numbers we knew there had to have been a boost leak or exhaust leak somewhere. All the ic pipes are good and there are no obvious exhaust leaks that you can hear. Shane thought it might be the hks wg. I took it apart and found a bolt that had come off, but after replacing that it doesn't seem that like was the culprit. I am planning on taking the wg apart a little more than I did last night later today. If you have any advice as to why my turbo hits 10psi at 5400 and 20 psi at 7400 lmk :)
p.s I told you guys I had more lag than I should! http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a98...0/IMG_0008.jpgThat's what the wg looked like when I took it apart. Shane made a good point that the spring would hold that piece down, so the fact that the bolt came off isn't that big of a deal. Also, anybody know if hks has any warranties on their stuff or if I have a chance at getting $500 wg replaced? |
Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Good to see you found it, i had a problem with my HKS a while back, i had no luck finding a part for it and i called everywhere, just get a tial.
p.s. get help working on your own car maybe? :bengals: :tequilla2:  |

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Looks like you need help on more than just your car.
two is spelt with a W. And i didn't break TWO center diffs in one night, so before you talk to people who have no idea they are talking about and make YOU look stupid, maybe you should think. I broke one center diff, but that's cause i know how to drive my car and i make just a little bit of power. One day you might get one of those two things. About your car, i don't mind helping you, where do you live? The HKS wastegate, i know two years ago i couldn't find any parts for it at all, i broke the wastegate diaghrapm and no where sold it. Good luck on your search. |

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Did you replace the TB shaft seals. I doubt that's the major cause of the lag, sounds like the wastegate is junky, but the seals wouldn't hurt and it's an easy job.

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
One thing I did notice is that the valve diameter is smaller than the 40mm opening. Here's a pic to explain. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a98...0/IMG_0001.jpg
I kinda think it's supposed to be that way, but then again, this is the first wg I've ever taken apart. The other little thing I noticed was that the back part of the valve where it's threaded looks like it should screw into the metal cup and then the bolt and washer on top of that. It looks like there used to be threads in the opening of the metal cup, but they are pretty much shot. Here's a picture of that as well. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a98...0/IMG_0003.jpg |

Halon the rest is not directed at you....... Someone seems to have a lot to say when they have a shop do everything for them and gives someone shit for doing work and paying for parts themselves and "messing up". I'm drunk so take this for what its worth: I'm sick of people giving shit to others saying "get help working on your own car". How the fuck is he suppose to learn? Especially coming from someone who pays to have a fuel pump installed a year ago. Give the guy a break, he is learning and I am trying to help him like a dsmer would do, not tell him to go find someone to help him. I gladly could have charged him but I gave him my shop/tools last weekend for him to do his brake rotors/lines/pads so he would learn and wouldn't get RAPED at a shop that charges $80 per corner. The kid wants to learn, not hear "have someone else do the work". Enough said. Point being is why tell him to get help working on his car when he is capable of doing such work, just needs a little help from the rest of us. Its like you are too good for him but yet you were in the same fucking boat about a year ago. Its pretty pathetic... Brian, if you need help, give me a call man. If you go to www.extremepsi.com and check out their HKS wastegates, they have a special gasket that goes up into the "valve". Not sure if this is to make it seal or what. I will call HKS tomorrow and find out what the deal is. If you find something let me know... |

Back on topic, before I go hack into something I'm unfamiliar with I do a quick search and create a new thread with the idea that somebody else will benifit from it in the future. I was unable to find any diagrams of hks wg's online so I called them to get an idea of what could be wrong. The guy working at hks was an idiot and didn't know a think about wg's. So after that, I decided to call a local hks distributor; MAP. I spoke with chris and he was nice enough to explain the simplicity of the hks wg briefly. So thanks Chris, unfortunatly I'm still a little stumped on what could be wrong after taking it all apart. So if you feel the need to rant go for it, but I don't believe I've done anything wrong to get on anybody's bad side, if so please let me know. Otherwise, any other advice or insight on the topic at hand would be fantastic. Thanks and happy 4th |
Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
I know the WG controls the amount of boost the Turbo runs. but doesn't the hot side make the boost? If you are getting 10psi at 5400 shouldn't you look at your turbo. I know you might of said it was new...but could the fins on the hots side be shot. Granted I am not using the right name for that. But you do get my point right? If you can not find a leak in the intake then look at were the exhaust is going. You have a 2g mani or something better? Is the engine tired out or is it from a freash rebuild. I don't know I am grasping at straws because this is stumping me too. Go back to the Boost controler see if thats messed up again.... How about your head could it have a bent valve... or a few. I hope you find the problem. It could be the WG after all. And switching to a Tial will fix the problem! Give HKS a call again. Talk to someone else.

Re: changed the gasket and still have boost leaks
Until recently I had an issue where my wastegate arm was falling off, but I could still see 10-15 psi above 5Krpm even with a very tired engine. (small 16g)

I have a heavily ported 2g manifold. The engine runs great. About 25-30k on a 7bolt rebuild. The head is a ported evoIII that was put on a few months ago. I have a slight lifter tick at times, but that's the worst of it that I know of. I may try to borrow my buddies boost controller and see if that's the problem but not untill I check the fins first. Everybody tells me to switch to a tial and I would love to. They have a great reputation, especially with wgs and bovs. My only problem is I've got this manifold flanged for a hks and if I were to switch to a tial I'd need a new mani as well as a tial wg and that gets a little pricey. I'd really like to fix the wg if possible. Thanks for the reply and I'll let you know about the fins later today. |
