Timing Belt SNAPED!

okay, I just got a call from my brother who's on 94 Westbound. He said he was driving and all of a sudden he heard something from the engine....pulled over and checked it out...he found the timing belt had snaped....I'm at work currently and haven't gotten much info from him...i'll be busy as heck this weekend, but i will run some tests to see what my compression, etc...anyways my question(s) is.....what causes the timing belt to snap like that? Out of a month I've only drive the about 5 times. I let my brother drive it to work and school cause he needs a car...Will abuse cause it to snap? I do know my brothers got a heavy foot, and i've constantly nagged at him about laying off the pedals and not racing. The times I drove it, the car sounded fine, all I know is that it needed an oil change...but thats got nothing to do with it.....I hope no bent valves or damaged internals...PLZZ....hehe...

This might be the end of her(my car)...:violin:

o yeah...its a 91 GSX, No mods what so ever upset N1 exhaust...did a stock rebuild about 10,000 miles ago.

Over tensioning can shorten the life of it.

check the backside of the belt when you see it next. If it's got wear marks on it, look at what's rubbing. Tensioner facing the wrong way? (turn the other way on a 2g) longer bolt in the oil pan cutting into the belt?

You will more than likely have bent valves...Sorry to hear about your misfortune!

Goodbye valves and maybe pistons too depending on when he shut the car off. Post pics of the DAMAGE !

Yeah, the valves are toast and possibly more. You could have seized a balance shaft or something ate throught the belt, like Chris said.

Re: Timing Belt SNAPED!

If you put the wrong bolt in to hold the oil pan, right below the crank pully, it can rub through your timing belt. I've seen that happen. Good luck with it!
