Small Oil Filters
 

Just thought I'd quick share this info. Hell it may be common knowledge for some here, but today is the first I've ever heard of it.

Apparently the filters that came stock on the 2004 RX-8's and a few other Mazda's (miata, 323) will fit onto our cars. They are supposed to be significantly smaller then any of the Mitsu filters, and may be helpful for those who need a little extra clearance in that area. Next time I'm in town and at the store, I'll have to check it out and maybe snap a quick comparison picture of it next to our typical mitsu filters.

Anyhow, here's some part numbers for anyone else who is in need of the smallest filter possible for space saving purposes:

Napa - 91365
Napa Gold - 1365
Wix - 51365
Fram - PH6607

From what I gather, all of those EXCEPT THE FRAM have the internal anti-drawback valve in them as well. Another big thumbs down to the ugly orange filter. But I know some people still prefer Fram for whatever personal reasons, so I threw their part number up there anyway.

Or you could get the forward facing filter housing from mitsu and still run a decent sized filter.

The miata filter is TINY. I'd be worried about flow with it. Just going between the stock miata filter and the MX-3 V6 filter on my miata I see a 10psi difference in oil pressure.

That is another option yes. But the forward facing housing does not have the ports which allow you to plumb in an external cooler correct? That's not ideal for those of us either running, or looking to run an external cooler.

This is just simple a cheap $2 method to get someone that little extra room they may need. My apologies for bringing forth a cheap alternative, though it may not be perfect for everyone.

For the most part, I made this post so in the future I have a quick easy way to find the part numbers for the filters myself. And just maybe, it might help someone else out at the same time.

but whatever fits your needs.....

most of the threads on imports are the same, and if you hold em up against one another the gaskets match too... i think it may just cause pressure changes and maybe efficiency???

id stay with the bigones!!!

I've ran EVO VIII filters they a quite a bit smaller.

Evo filters are the same as 2G filters.

Please, I was hoping to keep this thread actually informative. If anyone has facts or experience to bring forth, excellent. But please don't let this get cluttered.

Now to those who just "think" that they won't flow enough, here is the link I found my info off. People with EXPERIENCE using them. JP formerly of Shearer apparently ran this filter for 2 years without issue, as well as a few others.

Also, here's a couple other vehicles that use this filter:
-Saab 9-2x
-Some RX7's
-RX-8
-350Z

So apparently it's good enough for some other performance vehicles. Not sure if that means much.

I wasn't trying to nay say, Just trying to pass on my experience with some of these filters. The miata filter is skinny and short. The V6 MX-6 Filter is the same width, but an inch longer and got me a 10psi drop in oil pressure on cold starts and top end. If length is not the issue (though it probably is for most people [keep your mind out of the gutter guys]) the MX-6 filter seems to flow better.

I just picked up a 1365 from Napa to try out when I get my car running, and see if I notice any huge differences between the stock mitsu one on it now, and this one. I don't have a camera to take a picture, but its about the same circumferance as the smaller 2g filter, but maybe 2/3 the height.

Shitty cell phone pic for comparison sake added to the first post. This one isn't the Napa Gold, and it isn't the cheapest Napa. It's the middle grade one. It was 3.99.

Basically the circumference of the 2G filter, but the height of the 1G filter.

I actually get a mazda one for my 2g too. I believe it's a hastings filter and I usually pick it up from red rooster. First time I got it, I thought the guy gave me the wrong filter by mistake, but he said the same like you described, there are a couple mazda ones that fit the mitsu's as well. I don't have the model number on hand but the one I usually get is slightly shorter in length than the mitsu one, but still fits like a charm. I'll try to find and post up the model number.
