Blown Head Gasket?

- white smoke (especially at idle)
- 90s across the board for compression.
- Hard to get started, Sounds like a subie when it finally starts.
- Runs like ass.
- Coolent is running a little hot.
- Evo 3 Metal Head Gasket that has been on a couple of my engines, and head changes, Applied Copper Spray this last time i put the 1g head on. The normal sealant was looking a little tired.
- Torqued and retorqued to 76 ft/lbs.
Sound like a head gasket to you guys?

I would say so, i would get away from the metal head gaskets in my opinion

Re: Blown Head Gasket?

agreed, also maybe every once in a while when your changing your head/engine you could pick up a new gasket.

You can reuse metal headgaskets, I've done it several times with no problems. However going with 76 lb/ft is a little weak in my book. I torque my ARP's(used several times as well) to 95 lb/ft with oil.

I did have mine go early this year with no real explanation, I wasn't on it at all. The only real thing I can think of was I had my timing set up wrong in link. The symptoms were exactly as you're describing.

Naw, it's fine. Keep running it until it's down to running on 2 cylinders instead of just 3 and it gets enough coolant in the cylinders to bend a rod or two.

Thanks, Yeah i have never had issues with compression until this last time. Ive always made sure to put a nice coat of Copper Spray on the Head Gasket and never had any issues. Looks like im going to have to take the head off AGAIN!

And while your at it, make sure those headstuds are a bit more than finger (76lb) tight :).

Reusing metal headgaskets is nothing new.

Re: Blown Head Gasket?

You're using stock headbolts? I thought you were running in the 20s for boost, maybe they stretched. With all this money/time you put into it, should splurge for ARPs.

tpunx99GSX 08-01-2008 12:22 PM

Re: Blown Head Gasket?

Yeah i run 25-27 daily.
I may pick some up, otherwise i think i have a set of 6bolt ARPs to go with my 1g head. I would have to tap the block though.

You can't reuse stock head studs! Spend the $80 for ARP's and save yourself all this hassle.

Cant = Shouldn't. I know you shouldnt but these have worked fine for the time they have been on the car. Yes im planning on getting some ARPs now and a new metal head gasket. Anyone know the mitsu part number for the evo 3 head gasket?

Metal head gaskets dont blow like oem ones, so usually you can copper spray them and it will still seal just fine. But the raised sealing material has wiped off after using it multiple times.

I have tried many times to get out of dsms, but i just cant give up on a car that is:
a) Completly paid off
b) i have spent so much time and effort on. (and money)
c) usually works.
d) has everything i have wanted in a car.
