what is normal oil pressure for our cars
I was wondering what is normal oil pressure for our cars ...
Im getting at first start up it takes like 20 sec to register on my auto meter Gauge it creeps up to 10 the hits 25 then it maxes out at 75 . then when its warm it sits between 15-25 then under load it only goes to 40-50 psi under full boost i can some times hear the lifters not getting enough oil but only when i have driven it hard.. i am running rolla T 10w30 3qts with some 15w30 mixed in about 2 qts i did take out the balance shafts and cocked the berring oil holes except for one in witch i could not get to budge in the back i took the front shaft with a slightly bigger journal and put that in the rear spot and it was in all the way blocking the oil hole at least i think it is. it did not want move at all after i put it in there i took apart the oil pump to inspect it . did have some scoring in there but i did not think anything of it ... all the rod and mains looked fine low oil pressure worries me is there a way to block the relief i think the guy i got it off of may have ported the relief ? is oil pump dying ? |
Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
Oil pressure is RPM dependant, not load.
Once the engine/oil is fully warmed here is where my Evo sits: idle = 5-20 psi hwy cruising @ 3k RPM = 70-80 psi When the engine was cold I can see over 100 psi. |
Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
Lifter tick is normal for a higher milage 1g with the small hole HLA's. The front balance shaft is oiled right off the main oil galley. If you do not have one of the oil holes plugged off that will cause low oil pressure. The easy way to remove the balance shafts is to install a turned down rear balance shaft and just leave the front shaft in but do not put the belt on, then the shaft blocks the oil holes.

Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
yay now i get to replace rod bearings :frown: i gess oil pressure was not enough it now knocks at 2200-3000 rpm noticed it after doing 3 3rd gear pulls to 6500 for tuning .. and its real slight .. so my ? is can i just put the rod and main berrings in or do i have to pull the crank and have that turned or polished. man i am pissed it just started to make good power too ! got my LO lift down to 1 no knock was running real strong afr was at 10:5 to 11:0
at wot got the timing to 18-20 degrees boost was at 16psi on 93 oct afr at idle was 12-14 i guess the best thing i could do is pull it apart and mic it ? this is bull shit 3rd engine in 4 weeks ran for a week ... |

Thats the way it is with my motor except warm idle is around 30 - 35psi, I kinda wish the OP gauge would go over 100 psi just to see where it is when its cold.. I'll be out there in a little bit to check your car out, Really sucks to hear man! -Stephan |
Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
Did you replace the oil cooler, oil pump, etc? Something might be bad on contaminated

you need 10psi for every 1000rpms |
Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
yeah, on cold warm up my car hits about 100-120
3k rpm i'm at 75-80 depending on how warm the car is This summer I'd hit a minimum of 6psi at idle, but most of the time more around 13, with the cold its more like 20. I had some oil psi concerns, and i'm currently running 20w-50. I'll probably change to 15 or 10w-40 for the winter. |

Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
True. With most modern cars i'd say its more like 20 psi per kRPM... but you really should just go by what the factory service manual tells you is OK.

Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
I think you need to slow down a tad bit and rethink your strategy here.
You mentioned to me you put a trans together but left some things out that you didnt know what they were. Just that tells me you should slow down, do things the right way the first time, ecause if ya dont, the dsm will stab you right back! Quote:

Re: what is normal oil pressure for our cars
My car when cold will easily go over 125 psi if I let it(I'm not an idiot). When warm, at idle I'm about 10-8psi of oil pressure. No balance shafts. I have a restrictor on my turbo feed line. Cruising 5th gear is about 50psi. WOT pull gets to maybe 80-90.
