I have no sympathy. It was his decision to void the warranty. Now he has to pay.

If I ever had a GT-R I would run the warranty out then mod the hell out of it. No sense of losing a perfectly good warranty on a high end car like that.

If you aren't going to have a professional tune the car then you need gauges. I assume this guy didn't have a wideband.

Plenty of Evo motors have been lost by guys 'saving' money installing a MBC instead of getting a proper tune.

Well, he's from Lebanon, well known for its citizens' tuning prowess.

He has a Cobb AccessPort which they claim is PnP (I still wouldn't trust any off the shelf map, especially for a GT-R) but it sounds like he ran the wrong tune.

Warranties have been voided b/c of alignment settings; you pretty much just need to assume you are not getting a factory warranty when buying a GT-R. I also fixed your scoring ;)

that's crazy. i agree. I don't know why people expect these kinds of cars to be bullet proof...especially if you keep beating the sh*t out of it.

There warrenty pretty much ends the min you drive the car off the lot.

Off-the shelf map = fail. Just stupid on all fronts.

Nissan def stupid on that front. But isnt mitsubishi the same way on the evo? or do they have an option to modify as long as its done at a shop? You would think the "Tuner God" car would allow you to put on parts from at least certain manufacturers as long as installed by a shop.

GT-R's suck. All I hear about is them breaking and Nissan refusing to honor warranties. Like an over-rated 2010 DSM.

I would of towed it somewhere and left it there hopeing someone would steal it. then claim insurance on the $104k car.

If you can afford to import a car like that then you can probably afford to fly a tuner in with it. I doubt that very many people have that kind of money there.

I'm not sure what import duties are like in Lebanon but in Thailand there is a 100% duty on foreign assembled cars. That's why I only saw one STi and not a single Evo the whole time that I was there...having a sports car in most of those countries is ballin' on a scale that none of us will ever know.

By reading some of the posts in the original thread, it seems like most of the GT-R owners know very little about cars or tuning, which is fine, but they seem a big confused on some things. It also might be that you can't rely on the knock sensor to save your ass on on those cars. Nissans knock detection/response isn't worth a crap on the 350Z, SR20DET, KA24DE, etc and maybe it isn't so hot on the GT-R. I don't know how good it was on the older Skylines, since all the ones I tuned didn't have factory ECUs anymore.

Re: Nissan GT-R owner voids warranty, greandes $36K engine

That's an unfortunate situation he is in, but how can anyone blame Nissan for not covering that under warrantee? I can see being upset if all he did was put an exhaust or a couple bolt-ons, but he changed the tuning, and even admitted that the tune he used was meant for a higher octane fuel than he was using. He then admitted he gunned it past someone and it blew up. He was driving it hard, with the wrong tune. How can you expect anyone to honor that under warrantee?

That is one thing I do like about my DSM, if I blow it up, I know I can afford to lose it because I only paid $2k for it in the first place. I could not afford to blow up a brand new GT-R.

Re: Nissan GT-R owner voids warranty, greandes $36K engine

My comment about warranty's wasn't really directed at this particular story. I have heard all kinds of stories of people doing something so little as disabling the traction control, and Nissan will void the warranty.

Edit:
I know these aren't the only stories like this, just examples.
