It's been a long time coming, but I'm worried about that country's future and what it will mean for the region. They are broken and I don't know that they can survive on their own.

What they need is a strong handed dictator to keep the various sects and problem makers under control, instead of forcing democracy on a culture not ready for it.

It'll be interesting to see how things pan out there. I kind of agree that we've done what we can do there, and it's time to scale back. I doubt if anyone knows for sure. It'll be interesting to see if these guys take credit for the good parts of it. I'm sure it'll be the usual Bush-bashing session that Obama is so good at.

Yeah, their culture is so heavily religion oriented. It's kind of crazy seeing the different denominations fighting for power. It would be frightening to see catholics fighting with baptists, lutherans, etc. here.

Ther is unfortunatly no good out-come here, we could stay there forever and it will be as it is, costing us billions of dollors and countless more lives. Or we can leave and will go back to exactly the way it was before. We have done a lot of good for these people, built schools, stores, homes, but there is no way to build a stable country with all the fighting going on between religios factions. There has always been war and will always be war.

Actually my bet is on the oppisite. hes going to take credit for ending it and sticking by his goal. But he had been on the phone with Bush today (they are tight lipped as to what was said) but id be willing to guess that he is going to give credit to Bush for at least finding saddam.

I was surprised when Biden actually gave Bush some credit for winning over there about 3 months ago.

Obama didn't end this war. Bush did with the "Surge" in 2007. I saw this first hand as I was extended an extra 4 months on top of my already 18 month deployment. It really sucked at the time, I hated Bush with a passion, but I have to give him credit, it really did end the most violent part of the war. After the surge this war was pretty much over.

The surge worked. Obama still chokes when he has to admit that.

Re: 5pm

yes the surge worked. but Yet 3 years and they were still Fighting a war with no time line and end was not the right thing. Obama came into office with a strict time line. He has now just met that time line, without calling mission accomplished as bush did way too early.
I hope that Iraq can come through and rebuild their country, initial estimates of dead iraqis range between 150,000 - 1.5 million. Unfortunately we may never know the true death count.
Honestly there is no reason to come down on the guy that officially ended a very unpopular war. I always will have respect for our soldiers that fought in the war.
Who can say whether McCain would have done the same thing?
As long as this sticks and the Iraqis finally do the right thing and put in a government that will unite the people and bring baddies to justice, they will be fine. We can only hope that it doesnt go the other way.

Just like Vietnam ended in 1975 right Tom?

Yes. I know people were still dying because of IED's, etc. But 99% of the fighting stopped back in 2007/08.

Honestly, no matter what the guy does, Hell he could cure cancer and you anti anything obama would come up with an excuse to knock it down. Its an election year so of course the right and mid-right will bring up any issue and make it obama and the democrats fault. Hell he could take a Right wing policy, Give them full credit for it, sign it into law and the right will yell and scream that they dont want this policy and WAAH WAAH WAAH. Do you guys ever get tired of bitching and complaining all the time? Just shut the fuck up for once and be happy that our troops are leaving that wasteland.

I'm extremely happy that less soldiers will be fighting and dying. Doesn't mean Obama deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. Oh wait, he already got one that he didn't deserve. :crapper:
