'98 Eclipse GSX
Picked up an auto '98 Eclipse this afternoon.
It apparently has a spun rod bearing. Upon tearing it down in the next couple days I hope to decide what exactly I want to do with this car. It's not perfect but is a lot cleaner than my '95 and the plan is to make it a solid daily driver. So when you say "daily driver" do you mean 10 seconds daily driver? lol nice pick up man. My friend was flippin through craigslist today and he saw this listed and it sparked his interest. I laughed. Anyways, good luck brad |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Thanks Brian, you'll have to hit me up if you ever come back down to the cities.
I'd just like to convert this car to a manual, keep the turbo setup, put some bigger injectors in it, run some corn and bring it to Shane and have him work his magic on it and have a fun daily driver. No need to be the fastest or anything like that. |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Good plan dude. You gonna sell the owdee now? Looks like a real clean car!

Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Brad, you should buy my '95 and take all the parts from it, stuff it in this and ditch my shell. Just saying...

Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
If you need a pedal assembly and what not, let me know also. My car is getting parted out.

Finished pulling the motor yesterday afternoon, despite having the pull the whole passenger side hub because of a stuck axle. Hopeful to have some not so carnage pictures later today. |

2 flex plate bolts fell out when I took off the converter and I was hoping that this was the "rod knock." I don't think thats the case any more. |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
grab a set of oem bearings and plastigauge it after you take some emery cloth to the crank to remove any garbage, if theres no gouges in the crank that catch your fingernail and the plastigauge shows its within spec, id see no problem in re using any of that, i ran mine very little just to move it up to the garage after i lost oil pressure and the bearing was destroyed, seems like he may have caught it early enough.
How do the mains look? |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
I think I'll try that and see if everything is in spec. I just remember reading that replacing a messed up bearing without really know why it went bad isn't the best idea. This is also going to be my daily driver once its up and running so I'd hate to have another rod bearing go out in a month or two and not have a way to get to work.
I didn't look at the mains. You guys think I should? |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
From the pics, I don't think the #4 journal is saveable.
|
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Why is that? Sorry if its a dumb question, but I have never delt with a spun bearing before and want to know everything I can.
I've done some reading on it, but not enough to feel comfortable enough with it. |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Looking at it a bit more I wont be able to throw some new bearings at it. I can feel lines on the crank with my fingernail.
I think I'll just look for a cheap manual tranny/transfer case and throw in the 6 bolt from my 95 or rebuilt the stock 6 bolt I have in my shed and jsut rock it like that. |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
A little update.
Tore apart the rest of the motor last night and every rod bearing was spun and almost all of the mains looked pretty rough. I'm just going to ditch this motor and then probably pick up another 7 bolt and just get this thing back on the road asap. Awe, two cute little DSM's http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0562.jpg And random pictures I took before running to bed before getting in trouble. Sorry they aren't great but some pictures are better than no pictures. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0573.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0574.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0575.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0576.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0577.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...p/IMG_0578.jpg |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Looks like the bearings in the 1G I picked up. I'im going to put it back together and sell it as-is, I don't feel like replacing the short block, too many projects right now.

Kiggly's kit for a 6 bolt in a 2g is cheaper than buying a new motor. I think I'm just going to put my motor/turbo setup from my '95 into this guy and let er buck. Then if I can sell my other car as a shell I'll have enough money to maybe get a nice converter and have a quick car again. Hopefully start to put in some overtime here at work and get that kiggly kit ordered in a week or two.:sex2: |
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
You gonna swap everything into this car since you're trying to sell off the black 2g or what?
|
Re: '98 Eclipse GSX
Yep, the motor/turbo set up will be going into this car and the black car will probably get parted out pretty hard core. I'll update the first post with an updated mod list of the parts this car will have on it ;)
I just got sick of having a fast car that was a tin can. This car is complete and shouldn't be that much slower being full weight but still have all the little comforts like a radio and heat. haha After I get it running with the auto I'll put it up for sale to try and get an evo though. If it doesn't sell before prime track season I'll put some slicks on it and try and make a few passes with it and go for broke. |
