PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

In an effort to step my tech. Game up, I'm looking into this but I have no clue how it really works or how to use it.

I found ps3mediaserver.org, a forum with info but I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with it?

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

I use it on a daily basis, I have a Windows Home Server, and PS3 Media Server serves up my media to my LG TV as well as my PS3. Very simple program to use, but my two biggest suggestions would be:
- Get a router with UPNP capability.
- Have a dedicated computer serve it up with plenty of RAM.

Using the Media Server with the PS3 is ok, for some reason it will freeze occasionally, like it is spooling, but when i use it on my TVs Media software, it works perfectly.
Let me know if you need some settings to use.

btw, this is where you want to go to get the software for the server. http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/
The beta version is really great.

Make sure if you want to stream video you are using all wired connections; wifi will not keep up when you start doing HD content.

I have friends that use this, IIRC they were running it on a standalone buffalo USB/NAS drive and it worked great!

Ive tried a number of them before i decided on this one a long time ago. The reason I chose this one was due to a) it being free, b) very light weight and c) the number of formats it transcodes is the best i have found.
There are also a lot of mods you can attach to it that allows other things such as moving previews, IMDB connections and lots of other cool stuff. and plus it was really easy to find google PS3 Media Server. and it comes right up. haha.
I used Windows Home Server as the OS due to the company i worked for having a Microsoft Gold partner copy that no one was using. :) as well as it running as basically a mod of Window Server 2003.
I tried going to Linux, but couldnt find a good flavor that would install correctly and just work properly. Seems every time i try and run linux, the install is always a pain in the ass, and i give up. haha

Sweetness, Just got home gonna have some dinner and stuff then hopefully try setting this up tonight.

I don't have a computer or at least a decent one to dedicate to this, any suggestions?

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

I'm currently trying to set this up right now.

I have 2 external hard drives that I can put files on, but I guess I will need to get some kind of computer to feed this thing.

I might have to sit down with someone along with some paper and a crayon or box of them so this sinks in.

I guess this leaves me with some questions.

Can't I just use my PS3 as a computer? By that I mean can't I just plug in my external HD and play things thru there?

I only have a 40GB PS3, so its an old one. I'm off friday if anyone fancies stopping by.

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

I believe you can just plug in a hard drive but i never did that.
Also looking back at the original post and your last post, there is a difference between PS3 Media Server and the media server function of the PS3. The Media Server Function of the PS3 is basically a receiver of Media from another source. The PS3 Media server is a seperate software that i linked. (also the forum you linked in the first post is the Forum for this software called "PS3 Media Server")

So to get the Facts Straight:
Media Server Function on the PS3 - Client or Receiver of the media to play on the TV
PS3 Media SERVER - Serves up the media to the Clients, Transcodes the video into a readable format.

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

Sweet.
Thanks for the help.

I got it setup and working great so far, like you all said it won't keep up with 1080i/p movies, but music and normal quality movies do great.

I got to get back to my lady now and play with this later, but keep any helpful tips coming, I have a lot of time off coming up so I should be able to get familiar with this.

I have looked into this as well... I don't know a lot and am still learning. But here are a couple things i have learned.

-PS3 doesn't like itunes downloaded music. One way around is to burn the music to a disc (or folder on the harddrive and use those files on your ps3.

-PS3 only works with External hard drives formatted in FAT32.

-PS3 harddrives can be upgraded if so desired. With a laptop sized hardrive. (about $45 for a 320gb)

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

Thanks Rosey, I heard that its simple to upgrade teh internal HD in teh PS3, but never looked into what it improved or needed anything additional.

that site listed in here above, says it has some iTunes software or something which might take care of those incompatibility issues?

I'll play more and report back.

Has anyone done this:

I have the 40gb PS3, so this could be beneficial, I know my brothers have the larger/newer PS3 and they say mine is slower.

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

^lol, thanks man. I just found those. I think I might do this in the near (hopefully) future. Then I can just load up my PS3 HD with movies and watch what I want to.

We usually download movies and shows then watch them when we want to, I like it a lot better rather than trying to make sure that I'm sitting in front of the TV by 7pm when I have stuff that I should be doing.

However, with frequently downloading things having a good desktop to be the server would probably be a good idea.

I looked up what a NAS drive is, and that sounds like what I would like to end up with. It sounds pretty pimp actually.

Does anyone have more info on how it works?
It sounds like it would need the ability to have software installed onto it so that it could be used as a media server for the PS3.

Re: PS3 Media Server - anyone use it.

It looks like the Buffalo Linkstations support DLNA streaming out of the box. Its tough to tell if the standard ones do out of the box or if you need upgraded firmware to support it, but the Linkstation Pros advertise it out of the box:

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch...%20LINKSTATION

Not bad for the money! Anyone using one of these?
