Timing belt and oil
 

I have a 92 awd plymouth laser. Today I noticed the timing belt was wet with oil. The valve cover gasket did not look like it was leeking but I am going to look into it more tomorrow. Also my alternator looks wet with oil. When I checked the oil level it was low, but not below the hash mark because I added some last week,that is why I pulled off the cover.

any thoughts?

Cam Seals? That would be the best thing to have shit out. Anything else behind the t-belt cover is gonna be a bitch to get at.

Will the oil on the belt cause the belt any harm. After I fix the oil problem should I worry about the condition of the belt?

Oil on the timing belt is not good. Depending on how long the belt has been on, you may want to change it. If you change the timing belt maybe the water pump would be a good idea too. Just a suggestion.

If you'd like your valves to stay intact and your pistons to be dentless, you should do the timing belt. Oil on the tbelt is bad news.

The tbelt was just done about 16,000 ago. Is there any way to tell if it is shot or am I better off just to do it?

It will work. It's just a metter of time before it breaks. Risk it if you'd like. I sure wouldn't.

Your best bet would be to replace the belt. Oil on it can cause it to jump teeth/slip which wouldnt be good for the engine at all! Find out where the leak is then fix it and replace the timing belt. Good luck.

I'd say just change the belt. I've seen the belt skip just 2 teeth in one case and it bent valves. If the belt goes, it'll take about half the valves with it. Since the 4g63 is an interference design, the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different times - it can fuck up the pistons as well. Its a possibility. In one rare case, it cracked the head. It'll lead to a head job. I agree with Josh - I wouldn't risk it dude. At the very least, it'll mean bent valves.
