Tranny Choices.
Basically, I need a new tranny for my car. What are my options? It's a 92 awd 5 spd 6 bolt
Will a 2G awd tranny work? do I need a 2g xfer case then? shifter cables? a 1g 1990 tranny(prolly need xfer and shifter cables then...)? a "JDM" switchable tranny/xfer case? (there is one for sale right now). I'm gonna call local places to see if they have any 1g AWD trannys. yeah, right... |
Re: Tranny Choices.
So I guess my diagnosis was correct?

Re: Tranny Choices.
John has 2 awd 5speed 1g trannies. The first one needs a VCU and has a welded center diff. The 2nd one he got from a friend when he worked at Wayzata Mitsubishi. He was told it needs a "rebuild". The 1st one needs a rebuild as well I would imagine.
Its a start, as I believe no hard parts are broken. Make him an offer. I am unsure if these are 90 or 91-94 trans. The 90's require shifter cable modifications, and the t-case switch. Switching out the shifter is also a good idea/required. Your best bet is to get a US market 91-94 awd transmission. |

I wouldn't bother with the 2g tranny swap. You could get 700-800 for a used 2g awd tranny if it is in good shape. Used 1g ones go for 300-400 generally. |
Re: Tranny Choices.
Ah the bracket, that is what I was thinking of.
It has been awhile since I've played the 90 tranny in a 91+ game or a 91+ tranny in a 90 game. |
Re: Tranny Choices.
Ok, well thanks. That is a start. So no to the switchable tranny?
|
Re: Tranny Choices.
No switchable tranny unless you're not going to make any power. The switchable has the same internals as a 90 tranny, some of which get swapped out if you have Shep rebuild it. It's cheapest to get a 91-94 core and ship it out to him.

Re: Tranny Choices.
what does it mean when you say "switchable"?
|
Re: Tranny Choices.
Switchable between 2wd and 4wd.

I know a yard that has a couple of 1G AWD trannys
|
Re: Tranny Choices.
The switchable ones have different t-cases that can be switched between 2 and awd. We have one here we aren't currently using. I doubt we will use it either because the car isn't close to running and probably won't again. You can use them on dsm trannies also. The one we have is off of a 91-94.

Re: Tranny Choices.
So I could just use a "switchable" transfer case with my "normal" awd tranny?
|
Re: Tranny Choices.
if you have a welded center diff or a spool
|
Re: Tranny Choices.
Hmmm, but that's not very good for a "street car"
|
Re: Tranny Choices.
It can be used with a regular 91-94 tranny. We planned on using it for John's car but might just part it out as we are getting a house and won't have time to mess with it much.

Re: Tranny Choices.
will a 1991 gvr4 tranny/xfer work fine in my 92?
