Backup Light Switch: Can I use reverse without it?

I broke the backup light switch on my 2g tranny clear off the threading. Luckily I got the whole thing out (threads and all) but can I still go in reverse without the switch? I just got the tranny back from shep and on his site it says something about not being to use reverse if the switch is not working right? If anyone knows please let me know, thanks.

its probably illegal to use a car without reverse lights.....but there are so many things that can break and stop a car from working.....do the designers of these cars actually say "now, what ELSE can I add to this mess that could act up and stop the car from working...."

I was considering removing the wire to simplify things in my engine bay, but I am lazy

Mine has been broken for years. Don't worry about it. But your reverse lights will not come on...

Reverse lights are actually not required. According to SD and NC laws anyways. Only 3 rules apply if you have back-up lights:

(1) Can only be white
(2) Can only have max of 2 lights
(3) Can only operate while car is in reverse

That is why a busted taillight that shows white light is illegal. It could possibly be mistaken for a back-up light.

And you can still use the tranny without the switch (of course you will lose some fluid). But a switch that is installed too deep (ie not using a spacer/washer under it) will cause it to lock up in reverse and 5th. You could just remove it and replace it with one of those vent balls that you see on top of the T-case or tranny.
