I wouldnt worry too much about sprigns/retainers. At AF there a guy (95gsx_racer or something like that) that has been running stock springs/retainers on his 272's and hes revves out to 8500, and has done so for many years. Hes a very knowledgable guy and when he still had his DSM he was running low 11's.
