A gateway drug is a drug that's use causes people to move on to harder drugs. People who start out smoking pot and move on to harder drugs is better explained by the age, availability and willingness to use drugs of the individual. For instance, someone who is in 7th grade is probably not going to know much about hard drugs much less where to get them from, but they are going to know about, and where to find pot. If that person is willing to try any kind of drug, they may be the ones that grow up and get into harder stuff, but it's not because marijuana was the gateway to the harder drug use. Marijuana only comes first because it is more available which is where people get the idea that it is a gateway drug, but it really isn't.
