The shims are to compensate for the carrier bearings wearing out. Some people try the window weld fix instead which doesn't seem optimal to me. The shims are easily reversable.
I have the noise in my car. It's loudest on a third gear decel. It's not that high on my list of stuff to fix, so I've learned to ignore it. I will be addressing it though and plan to use shims to do so.
