To be honest, the 255/40/17 that I have now (Kumho XS) on a 17x9 wheel ride better than a 235/45/17 (Dunlop Z1) did on the stock 17x8 wheel.
The more rubber you have on the pavement the better the car will go around corners, more so for width than diameter. An 18" tire will have more rubber than a 17", but that doesn't mean it's always best. If you want performance I'd go with a 17" wheel and never look back. If you are concerned about the ride quality differences between a 16" and 17" high performance tire when you're splitting hairs at that point.
