I had it explained fairly well to me by a regular customer back when I worked at the gas station.
Africans: Well, they're Africans.
African Americans: Africans who have gained American citizenship
Black Americans: Pretty self explanatory, the term is used as a way to differentiate themselves from the Africans, who they want nothing to do with (she identified herself with this group).
******s: The ones who completely fill the stereotypes... you know, rude, ignorant, loud, fried chicken, etc.
