Ive tried a number of them before i decided on this one a long time ago. The reason I chose this one was due to a) it being free, b) very light weight and c) the number of formats it transcodes is the best i have found.
There are also a lot of mods you can attach to it that allows other things such as moving previews, IMDB connections and lots of other cool stuff. and plus it was really easy to find google PS3 Media Server. and it comes right up. haha.
I used Windows Home Server as the OS due to the company i worked for having a Microsoft Gold partner copy that no one was using. as well as it running as basically a mod of Window Server 2003.
I tried going to Linux, but couldnt find a good flavor that would install correctly and just work properly. Seems every time i try and run linux, the install is always a pain in the ass, and i give up. haha
