Being that i work for an insurance company i know there are multiple reasons for this both because of the ACA and having nothing to do with it:
I could write this out, but this person wrote an excellent article outlining the reasons. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...surance-plans/

the ACA simply gives rules to insurance companies about the standard of care they should provide.
Whats funny is that the company i work for deals with insurance in california currently, in our minneapolis office we have Insperity that sells UHG plans. I got a notice from UHG stating we may have to switch plans because the plan we are on may not be available after the first of the year. When i looked on insperitys website i found a reply to this mail, which stated "None of the plans sold by Insperity will change. Please disregard this mail" I.e. I dont need to do anything to qualify for ACA.
My plan should also not increase by much, if any.
The reasoning behind rate increases could vary greatly. From your employer deciding they dont want to contribute as much, to the plan previously costing less and now they need a plan that meets the requirements so the plan costs more. It also depends on Risk assessments done on your company by the underwriters of the insurance company. If you dont know what these are, the insurance company rates your company based on how often your employees go to the doctor, any ailments they have (such as MS, Cancer, Smokers, other diseases, pregnancies, kids with disabilities, husbands or wives with disabilities) then they rate the entire company based on this factor. Your company and your employees have as much to do with your rate increase as the ACA does. Insurance premiums have been going up for many years, its unwise and too easy to simply blame the ACA for this.
