But yea a lot of the smaller suvs are based off FWD and then add power to the rears to give it awd when it slips. A lot easier to control thats for sure, versus like the voy would be - rwd and then kicking in the fronts. Thats how my dads tahoe was and I never had any issues driving with the auto mode on.

My Tahoe is the same RWD with the fronts kicking in as needed.
My tahoe is RWD and will kick on the front wheels needed in Auto 4WD, in 4Hi it will lock all 4 wheels, but I've been told to only use that on truly slippery surfaces.
Last night I had to try hard to get my Tahoe to get a bit sideways and that was that corner coming into my hood from radisson where it is a sharp turn carrying a good amount of speed and the whole turn lane was covered in snow/ice.
Don't over think it, basic AWD capability and good tires you will be just fine.
Cooper Discoverer ATW is what I just got a 50k mile tire designed and rated for snow and year round use. Def. feels like a snow tire to me, esp compared to the old Michelin LTX M+S.
