Uhh, the factory downpipe is braced, it is a good idea over the long run for any manifold to not have to support the weight of the turbo and downpipe by itself. Obviously a tubular manifold is not going to have the same strength as a cast piece, especially with the kind of heat cycles it experiences.
There was never anything wrong with their manifolds, only the people that installed them. They do give a performance increase, and there probably even better designs by now. Cast is always going to be more durable though.
