Do a compression test(if you can). Pull the valve cover off and do a visual on the rotating parts up there. If you don't see anything, then it's time to pull the pan off. Could have been just about anything in there. Put a breaker bar/socket on the crankshaft bolt and rotate the engine over by hand(pull the spark plugs so it's easier). DO NOT start it. You already know it's sounds like shit in the condition it's in.
