I recently did this to our motor, not so much to determine the range i could adjust the cams before having piston contact, but more so I could verify my cam advance was where it should be with respect to the crank (factory specs), as well as verify the cam specifications with the cam card.

it is much trickier without solid lifters (if I did it again I would definitely use some), but I was able to measure what I was after.
