Shipping a Car From Out of State

Has anybody bought and shipped a car from out of state? I want to know where and who I can get a shipping quote from.

Also what happens exactly? Like how did you pay for it? How do you make sure you don't get scamed? How long did it take for the car to arrive? Does the car arrive at your house?

I've never bought and or shipped a car from out of state and I was just kind of curious because I don't like anything local here.

Posted an ad and the guy gave me a quote and I paid him when he dropped the car off. it was $500 from South Carolina to here. I paid the guy before the shipper picked it up.

How did you pay for the car? My biggest concern is getting scammed out of thousands of dollars from the seller.

I sent a cashiers check to him.Via USPS overnight.

Pay pal would be the best way to do it. Or give the company the money for the car and they will pay for it when they pick it up.

I bought my old 1G off DSMTrader. It was in Nevada and I lived in Arizona, so I had it shipped to me.

I more recently bought my SC300 off ebay. It was in Illinois and I live here in the twin cities so I had it shipped to me.

The more recent one, I gave the guy a downpayment via paypal, and sent him the rest of the money as a Cashiers Check from my bank. Once he had the money, I then set up shipping with a local shipper that Momin (speedfreak) on here knows. The guy dropped the car off at the shippers local hub. They delivered it and I picked it up at there local hub here in New Brighton, and paid them the shipping costs at that time. Sounds like that is just how that industry is. If you want to ensure a "fast" delivery, be prepared to pay extra for that. If you go the cheap or medium route, you better be ready to play the waiting game, and be ready for their 1 week expected time frame they tell you at first, to turn into a 3-4 week time frame. From what I've gathered, that's simply how this industry is unfortunately.

I bought it from a member on here that is pretty respected so I trusted him. Made arrangments with the shipper on day one, he picked it up that day and I got it I belleve 2 days after that.

That site you gave me, different people bid to ship your vehicle or something? How does that work?

Like I said above, the auto shipping industry is kind of shitty. If you go to one of those sites and pick the lowest bidder, you better be prepared to wait despite what they tell you up front as being the "normal time frame".

You need to understand how the Auto Transport industry works. Nearly all these companies that will be sending you bids, they are not the company with the truck drivers. They are all middle men. They find a customer. Once they have you as a customer, there is apparently a database of somesort for the actual truckers to go and choose what they want to put on their trailer and deliver.

If you select the lowest bid, they now have to go and find a trucker to actually do the shipping for that low price. That low bid was to get your order, it does NOT mean they have a trucker lined up and willing to ship it for that price. Majority of the time, you are going to be waiting awhile until you find a truck that actually accepts that bid. And to be quite honest, if you go with the absolute lowest bid, they may NOT find a truck willing to do it that cheap.

I don't want to ramble on here, but I've been through this twice now. Unless you are prepared to wait up to 2 months for your car, I would NOT just choose the lowest bidder. You may get lucky and there may be a truck with a spare opening that was about to leave here, and they say "yeah go ahead and just slap it on there". But 9 times out of 10, that doesn't seem to happen. And you'll wait wait wait, until either that 1 out of 10 truck shows up, or the middle man convinces you to pay more because no one is accepting the first bid. And at that point, you'll be pissed that you waited this whole time and you should have just chosen one of the other bids instead.

And that's just you. The person you bought the car from will start to get irritated as well as they were expecting this thing out of their driveway by now.

I'm sharing this all with you for a reason, I've been through it TWICE now and now that I understand how that industry works, it all makes sense. The guy I linked you to out of New Brighton was great to work with, constantly keeps in touch and keeps you updated, and is local so you can go see him in person anytime you need to (most these others companies will be out of Miami, Phoenix, etc).
