Rtv

Before I even ask this question, I will say that i do know that you're supposed to use RTV grey / black in areas like your oil pan.

I assume it's because of it's oil resisting properties but I want to know exactly why you should use Grey RTV instead of say, red RTV. I figured it wouldn't make much difference so I used red on my oil pan since it was "high temp" and all that. ( was a temporary thing ). I already went and bought the right shit so I will be changing that up tomorrow but I was just curious! I think it's not sealing off the oil pan properly but it's hard to tell since it wouldn't have a constant leak.

Re: Rtv

As far as I know its all the same shit. I was also told to put some RTV on and loosly put on the oil pan bolts(so the RTV just bearly come in contact with the block). Then come back the next day and torque the bolts down.

Re: Rtv

Straight from the manufacturer:
http://www.permatex.com/products/aut...ket_makers.htm

In areas under high oil pressure, red RTV will leak. I'd used both red and black RTV on a variety of hydromechanical transmission assemblies and the black always holds better. For reference, I believe our relief is set as 3000 psi on our hydrostatic unit.

Re: Rtv

For anything engine related I use Permatex UltraBlack and never had problems. I absolutely hate any blue RTV and have never had a reason to use red so I cant say anything about it.Ultra Black for the win.

Re: Rtv

The first time I saw someone use RTV for turbo exhaust gaskets, I thought they were crazy! But I guess it works lol.
