What turbo?

Ok this just gets more depressing as this car comes apart. What turbo is this? This isn't the 14b because it has the secondary fins. I tried doing a search for this and didn't come up with much. I have a feeling it is a 13b but why is it on a manual transmission car these are supposed to have the 14b on them... GRR

Re: What turbo?

Ok now I am confused. Why would I have a 13b on my motor. It is a 5 speed I feel like I have been cheated out of my 14b. Is this because it was the first year of production? I don't think the owners would put on a smaller turbo nor did they change the transmission from an auto to a manual, if they did they did a really good job to hide that.

I am just going to have to save my money for a 16b turbo i guess

Re: What turbo?

Its not a 13"B" and you won't upgrade to a 16"B". You have a 13"G" and want to upgrade to a 16"G". I am sure the original 14b needed to be replaced and the previous owners used the cheapest junkyard DSM turbo they could find.

Re: What turbo?

I agree with s2kracka. Most junk yards have no clue what turbo it is. So what makes you think that is the original engine in the car? If that is a 13g in the car. I hope your cams are not from and auto also.

13b's are full of triangles that hate you. Dont confuse them with that harmless little turbo.

You beat me to it!

We did used to call the 13G a 13b. I wonder why we stoped. At any rate, that stopped about five years ago.

Re: What turbo?

Sorry about the confusion of the B and the G just got it and feel dumb that i didn't know about it. Still learning I guess....

I am thinking now they slapped on the little turbo not knowing the difference. the whole engine can't be from an auto. It still has the blue top injectors which means it has the 450s right? So the auto had the 390 yellows?.
At least I have the injectors and the origional engine. the car has 140,000 on it so i am thinking that the origional one went out a long time ago.
So... what can I do with this little turbo? How much will it withstand? Or is it to the dumpster with it?

Niether do many people. Search "14b" on eBay. One day I did, about 1/3 of the turbos advertised as 14b's had grouped fins indicating 13g or 16g variant. They wouldnt have just put a random 13g on a manual, its obvious the stock one blew and got replaced or got switched out for something bigger, then got converted back to stock (or atleast they thought what was stock ).

Re: What turbo?

13G's are pretty sweet, if you have two of them. One, however, is not the "hot street setup". If you want to be an internet hero, get yourself a 20G or Evo3 16G and some mild cams. Then you can bang a gong.

Re: What turbo?

It is fun driving with boost now instead of boost leak. SO fun lately that I think we need a new turbo. When it hits 13 psi one can smell the faint wisp of oil which indicated to me that the turbo is at its end. Like it was stated, it probably came from a junk yard off a used dsm. So I am going to have to switch anyway

The previous owner must have drove around (if you look at my intercooler corrosion story) with so much boost leak, they never got the car to work right and never noticed the wore out turbo.

SO now it is time to start thinking about replacement.

I can go two ways here

First I remind everyone that the car is stock (with a shot 13g ofcourse)

I can go back to the origional 14b

or upgrade to my lovely 16g evo III with evo III matching manifold

However funds are tight

I was wondering if I put on the 16G how many supporting mods do i need to go with it or can I run at stock 13psi with the 16G

Or should I save money go with berdas 14b and buy other supporting mods before the 16G

Goal for this summer for the car is around 250hp to 300hp
One upgrade I am going to do this summer is put on a nice exaust sytem (I havent picked one out yet though)

Re: What turbo?

If you want to do 250-300hp this summer, you better get started get the 16g ($450), get it ported, and run it as low as it will go (like 10psi) and you will be fine. Then, get some 550cc injectors and an afc ($300 if you shop around). Then take it to LSE or DB and have them tune it for ya @ 20psi, and you're good to go!
