Really Loud Ticking When Driving

Ive noticed really loud ticking while driving so today I started the car and tried to find where it was coming from. Well it looks like its coming from the head. Now is this just really bad lifter tick? How do you fix it? I know they have those "revised" lifters but those are expensive. When I put the lifters in I put them in oil and squirted the oil out and repeated and put them in there "dry". I read that somewhere so I followed it. Is that wrong?
Any help would be great!!!
Thanks,
Mike

Check your oil? Could be just lifter tick, but lifter tick can be bad...

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

If it just happened out of nowhere, your either low on oil or maybe its something else like timing. Usually lifter tick doesnt just start out of no where, it slowly gets louder and takes longer for it to quick down once the oil gets warmer.

If timing skipped a tooth or two, you will hear an audible knock which is pistons/valves hitting... Just double check the timing if the ticking just happened out of no where.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

Oil level is good, and timing is right on(just checked both) and the oil looks brand new. If i remember correctly it started out with just a little bit of ticking when I first started it this year and now (800 miles later) its really loud. I just pulled the valve cover and nothing looks bad or anything.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

Does the car seem down on power? Does it change noise under different load levels? Rpm dependant?

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

It seems a little down on power. Its usually loader in first gear with light load. I ran it yesterday and it seemed at like 5500RPM there was no added power at WOT. It also seems to pull better with 75% throttle Vs. WOT.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

I think you have a bad piston pin or rod bearing or main bearing.

Just rebuilt engine. All new main bearings and rod bearings. New crankshaft(machined) new pistons and rings. Compression is 150 across.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

Do a leakdown test. Rebuilt engines can have something done incorrectly and take a dump pretty quickly. I am not saying that is the case, but definitely a possibility. Take the valve cover off and check all the springs to make sure one isn't broken or coming off (if one of the retainers was missed).

All the springs and everything in the head look fine. Just pulled the exhaust manifold and everything looks normal.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

I am thinking a rod/main bearing.
Possibly piston related as well, start doing tests.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

If one of the HLA’s has collapsed,
you really wouldn’t notice it visually, witch could be the problem.
But lower end engine noise like wrist pins could sound like a collapsed HLA. But I don’t know how the “Loud Ticking’’ noise really sounds like and at what RPM. a lot of things cause ticking like ignition timing off, low oil and so on.

And you could have outstanding cylinder compression and pass a leak down test and still have a bad bearing or wrist pin. I have driven some cars that for the most part ran like a champ with only 10 thousand miles deep, and pop something loose In the lower end.

I hope its not somthing to serious.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

berda's 14b made a loud fast clicking noise throughout the rpms. We thought it for sure was lifter tick. Wrong, the turbo was the culprit, the turbine housing had a good size crack and had some shaft play. We put in a different turbo and the problem went away and he could drive his car without it sounding like a really pissed off chipmunk.

Re: Really Loud Ticking When Driving

I am with nytrider, sounds like a bottom end fuck up. I had really bad "lifter tick" in my car too, the 3rd fucking day I have been able to drive it, she seemed to loose pull all the three hours I was driving it until I tried to race my buddy in a Civic hatch. She barely made it to 5000 and when it did it was fuckin knocking really damn loud. Does it ever stall after boost?
