DSL Modems
I'm switching over from Comcast to Qwest, and need a DSL modem asap. Wondering if anyone here has any input as to which modems to stay away from. When I had DSL before, I had the Actiontek gateway wireless one. That was pretty nice because I didn't have to use a wireless router since it had one built into the modem already. I do have a wireless router right now, so it's not really a big deal, but it would be cleaner to just have an all in one so I don't have more wires all over. So anywho, I'm looking at the ones made be 2Wire. They seem decently priced. either the 1800hg, or the 2700hg. Anyone have any input on them? Or any other brands for that matter? Thanks

Re: DSL Modems
2wire devices are nice. As far as other brands I really don't even know what else is on the market. You can never go wrong with Cisco.

Re: DSL Modems
I fucking hate the 2wire ones, but they'd probably be fine for most people. The construction is nicer than the Actiontec but the options are very limited. For basic net access I'm sure its dandy.
For the record, I hate the Actiontec ones too, but lesser of two evils sort of thing

Re: DSL Modems
After checking online, it looks like comcast just lowered their prices. Hmm... looks like 43 for 6mb connection now.

Re: DSL Modems
Yea, I would personally stick with cable. Comcast sucks, but not as bad as Qwest...DSL is slower than cable to.

Re: DSL Modems
I had qwest before, and it was ok. Only thing I didn't like was that it would occasionally go down for like 20 minutes. But as far as speed, I don't download movies or anything, so DSL worked just fine for me. Pages came up quick, that's about all that really matters for me. It really comes down to price. I am paying 60/month for comcast, and qwest is half the price. So I think tomorrow I need to call up comcast and figure out what's up with this 42/month that is on their site.

Re: DSL Modems
Comcast usually has a deal where if you sign up for an extended period of time, they cut the price considerably. Worth looking into.

Re: DSL Modems
If you go with DSL, I have a DSL modem you can have cheap. I had it when I was with Qwest.

Re: DSL Modems
I've used up all introductory things from comcast, and it's a PITA to always have to count on some introductory cost that could at some time go away.
Jet, which one do you have?

Re: DSL Modems
I agree, Actiontec sucks. DSL is not as fast as cable unless you pay out of your ass for it, but then you could just buy business class cable and be even faster yet.

Re: DSL Modems
Well I have AT&T ... And I love it. I have a SpeedStream 5100. I pay 19.99/m for it. My speed is 3.0mb down and 512kb up. Not bad for the price I pay. I also was on Qwest back in MN at my parents house. They had a Cisco router. Now I don't know what brand they have. But I love DSL.
