Holset Turbos

So, after a lot of reading, looking, thinking. I more than kinda want a Holset HX35 or 40. Should put my car right where I want it to be, and I like the fact not many people use them. But I want to hear from anyone anything they have heard, read, saw, experienced, or just believe about these Holset's.

One of the most common claims, and main reason people get, is "faster spool than their Mitsu or Garrett counterparts."

Re: Holset Turbos

What makes a turbo produce boost sooner?

1) polar moment of inertia - probably not all that great on a turbo meant for a 350+ cu in diesel as the designers knew they had a LOT of high temperature exhaust mass to help get that turbine going.

2) a/r ratio. a conical nozzle wrapped into an exh housing. small ratios spool quick and reach choke early. this is likely why these turbos spool fast, if they even do at all.

3) a bazillion other factors

I dont understand the need to get a random redheaded-stepchild turbo to be different.

"wow your car sure is slower than my gt30R car, but props for being different!"

Re: Holset Turbos

^wow.
Actually everything in the hundreds of pages of Holset experiment users say opposite of your whole post. Who is right? I don't know.

They are proving spool and better top end.
ex. HX40 in mitsu .55AR housing 650whp, HX35 in a bolt on housing 26psi 494/420.

I am thinking about the same thing, in a nutshell if you want 61/35 like power do the HX40, you want something with a spool comparable to a E316G (don't know how much I believe this) but with flow better than a 50 trim do a HX35.
You have options for .55AR mitsu, BEP T3 .70AR, or stock holset where people have cut the divider (don't know how effective) or are having divided manifolds made.

My choice is HX-35, but being budget minded I might have to pay some $$$ to make it happen. I want it in a bolt on with internal gate.
It would cost me $360ish for the exhaust housing, lines, gasket + holset itself.
I think these turbos are appealing because of the spool/top end, but also because of the durability of a OEM turbo, I am not knocking any other turbo here.
Hope that helps.

Make sure to buy other awesome Bullseye products as well, like those baller V-trims they used to sell.

Re: Holset Turbos

The V-Trim is absolutely amazing, but I agree, the HX-35 is pretty well suited for the 2.0-2.5L engine range.

I have a buddy who has a Merker XR4Ti 2.3l with a volvo DOHC head and a HX-35....the thing screams!!

Re: Holset Turbos

People on tuners are shower low 11's on the HX35 and good power in the 400-600 whp range on the 35-40 with the shitty BEP housing. Assuming thats a fact, that isn't that bad?

There you go, talking shit again.

You calling anyone else a smartass is beyond funny.

My car makes great power for the boost i run Thanks for trying.

Re: Holset Turbos

No one has said anything to prevent me from buying one of these. I can't make up my mind.

Super Bleeder are you only skeptical because you don't know enough about them? Where as we all know about the tried and true turbos. I don't know anything about the Holsets other than what I've read on Tuner's from the small group of people that have them. And they claim and are trying to prove that these aren't just worthless diesel truck turbos...

Well enjoy the good laugh, ITS THE INTERNET. lol.
Also Kevin, I would say to try it depending on your goals for power and spool.
I know that I would try the HX35 because it supposedly spools quick, comparable to a E316G, one guy made 494/420 on a bolt-on housing at 26psi.
If you want bigger HX40, comparable to the GT35R sized stuff but again in the bolt-on housing it spools faster and has put down 650whp, though the power number i believe was on a stroker.

Re: Holset Turbos

If the HX 35 has done over 400whp, I'd probably go with that. And I'm sure if I didn't get that power with that turbo, something else is the problem, not the turbo. Setup I was thinking about:

HX35/40 with the .55 A/R BEP housing
FP Race manifold
Ebay external dump o2 modified for tial 38MM
Ceramic coat hot parts
1600cc's
e85
DSMLinkV3
BC 272s

Re: Holset Turbos

I know a guy that has had HX-35 with the BEP housing on his VR-4. He has HKS 280 cams and that thing spools like crazy. At part throttle at 10-15mph you can hear how that thing is begging to be pushed, spooling for no reason just waiting for you to hit it. It hits like a 16G.

Re: Holset Turbos

I dont have any personal experience yet, but after a month of research, I ordered a 7blade HX-40 with the billet 69lbs/min wheel. Ill be running it in a SS BEP Bolt-on housing.

There are pleanty of real world numbers that justify the claims made about these turbos. And although I am just learning to read compressor maps, they do back up the claims of these individuals.

SleepyDSM: Acccording to what I have read, a HX35 in bolton form will support 450 on pump, so on e85 I dont think you have too many worries. And in a BEP housing, spool claims are around 3700 for 20psi

That's what Colin is running now? Haven't heard anything from him in a while now. His car rocks.

Holset's and BW's both are very intriguing to me. I may have to run one or the other.

Re: Holset Turbos

Which hx40 compressor wheel? You should easily reach your goal with that turbo (regardless of which hx40 compressor) and your above list. Keep us posted.

I prefer the bolton hx40 over the hx35/40 any day of the week. Considering the spool speed, go a head and get a turbine that better matchs the compressor. It's good to see you stick with the turbine wheel that better matches the compressor wheel. You can get more out of a smaller bolton housing when you better match your wheels. If you were set on not going over 450 whp, I would say stick with the bolton hx35. I don't see a good place between the *bolton* hx35 and *bolton* hx40 for the hx35/40 hybrid. It probably could eak out over 500whp, but you'll need some healthy boost. The hx35 turbine wheel needs a nice size open turbine housing to get the most out of it and get into the potential of an hx40 compressor.
