Are they the same?

Hi I have a question and would like some in put on, Since I am new to owning a DSM. I have a 90 talon tsi awd and was wandering if the turbo 4g63 is the same as the na 4g63 the g1 6 bolts? Far as the internal like the cams the head, block, crank, and so on. I have herd that they are not but when I looked in my Chilton book for the 90 to 94 models the turbo and na the specifications where the same for the most part and on the same page. The page I am looking at is 3-4 of the engine and engin overhaul. The reason I ask this is that I am going to rebuild my engine is the spring. I would do it now but things are tight and a little research wont hurt. I found it is easer to find a na motor than a turbo motor in the junk yard. If you have any other in put on do and don’t's on these engine for me that would be great.

Re: Are they the same?

to my knowledge the na has slightly less aggressive cams and higher compression pistons, that you will probably want to change out if you want anything over stock boost. but if your rebuilding i dont see why you cant fix these errors. Also i believe it dosnt have oil squirters. obviously the head gasket is not the same as a turbo car. no knock sesnsor. other then that they are they same. the injectors might be smaller but im not sure. i might be wrong anyone can chim in and correct me

Re: Are they the same?

No oil squirters, higher comp pistons, different cams, no knock sensor, so I would say rebuild the turbo motor you have or if you need a block I have a turbo 1g 6 bolt block for cheap. PM me if you need one.

Re: Are they the same?

Hey Kranz,

The heads are identical with the exception of the camshafts (this excludes the 1990 Turbo, which had the same profile as the non turbo). The rods, and oil pumps are the same as well.

The major differences being already stated as the oil squirters, and pistons. and possibly oil cooler. I had NT block that did have a knock sensor hole so you might be fine there. And yes, it is completely find to run without oil squirters.

The non-turbo pistons are a different alloy, and can't take the abuse as well as turbo pistons. Everything else is fine.

i know many people have turboed the NTs but how much boost can they take, or is stock boost from a 14b pretty much the limit?

Re: Are they the same?

Thanks for all of the good info guys this help me a lot. Also is the NTs 4g63 the same from 90 to 94 right? Also if I wanted to use a NTs and turbo it and put more boost to it than stock is to change the pistons and use a turbo head gasket right? and swap cams. I would keep the turbo block and build it up and run a NTs for the time being. also any more tips or do and don't would be great and greatly appreciated.

Re: Are they the same?

If you run without the squirters make sure to port the oil relief valve on the oil pump housing. There will be insane oil presure without doing this. I run a N/A block in my car with turbo guts, no issues.

I think past April 92 the NA also went to the 7-bolt crank.
