Ok, after test driving one and listening from people who own one and riding in one.. i think i'm sold on a 2004 TDI Jetta

Its 100hp 177tq 38mph city 48 highway. 730 miles / tank.

The soul purpose of this car is saving money. My monthly payment would be around 300.

Now anyone that works for a VW dealer or know someone that i could save a few $$ and give them the comission?

I can probably get you a '03 with low miles and save you several grand, maybe more. The largest depreciation is when you drive a new car off the lot.

I would much rather buy new if/when I can afford it. You know exactly how the car was treated and broken-in in since day 1, which to me is very important to the car's life IMO.

The next car I buy will be brand new. I have done the used car thing over and over and when money permits, I am going to drive a car home with only enough miles on it to get it on and off the trucks and into the dealership someday. Just so I can call it mine, and all mine!

Thing is with the vw TDI i know that engine can go 300k miles without too many issues. and still be making 30+ miles / galon...

That car i will be most likely keeping for a long time just for the fact that it will be manual and 4 door plus the body of it is good.. galvanized etc etc....

I like their simple and usefull design. It might be leather but i'm not sure.. i don't like leather interiors, but theirs is pretty nice.

The shifter was oh sooo smooth.

its not only about the 38mpg, or 48mpg highway..

but its that its Diesel ... $1.59 / galon and stable prices of fuel is whats attractive....

i've never paid over 20 to fill up the tank of the eclipse or Stratus.. last two tank fills on the stratus were $28.50 and 27.99

that is 3 days of driving only... $10/day for fuel.. thats not right.. but if i think about it..
if i had the TDI it would be max 3 galons which is $4.76 at the current rates of diesel.

Compare the pricing you're finding on new to $16,500 for a 03 GL TDI with 10K and balance of factory warranty.

Nice choice on the desiel. Less money spent on daily driver equals more money for weekend car. While I kind of agree on not buying a new car it also has its advatages. Sometimes when you buy a used car you save money up front but can spent more keeping it running.

My roomate has a Golf TDI. It's a pretty nice car for the most part. I would definately buy one. And as far as it being slow... Well, I wouldn't call it fast, but it's no slouch for a car that gets 40mpg (city). Hell, it's faster than my Subaru, which gets half the gas mileage of the TDI.

yup.. i agree about the used car....

i've gone before buying used cars and end up having to buy a new clutch right away, new brakes, new tires, dirty interior torn up stuff, dings everywhere, no where near perfict of new.

Or you get the car with 20k miles on it, needs tires, brakes, clutch, etc etc none of that is covered under waranty.... The person who is selling it knew they werne't going to keep it, never washed the car in the winter, never took care of it, only cleaned it up right before they are about to sell it, always puts crap gas in it, never did any maintenance/greasing up, balancing rotating, jumping on curbs etc etc..

Since this car i'll be buying and keeping for as long as it runs i'll most likely go with a new one that way i know what exactly has hapend to the car the whole its life.

Some cars like DSM there are benefits of buying used, mostly because that means you get to upgrade things...

on daily drivers it might be different.

Hmm, this is starting to interest me even more....

I may have to go test drive one of these (hopefully they have an auto) to see what they are like.

Anyone have a preference to a VW dealer??
