Problem Diagnosis...Throwing Belts

Alright so a few weeks ago I was out playing in my GSX. Suddenely the car lurched and I lost power steering and stuff.

Basically threw my Water Pump/Alternator Belt, and the Power steering belt went as well.

Alright so got that fixed, found another problem, and fixed that as well.

I left tonight to go wash my car because it was dirty as hell. Just as I got into the carwash, it made the same lurch it did before, and I knew that it had just thrown the same belts.

Why is it doing this? I called Dane and he said it had happened to his Galant and it may be a Harmonic Balancer.

Any other ideas? Or is it indeed the Balancer? Thanks for any replies!!

Umm, try moving the balancer, if it's dead you should be able to slide it in and out on the carnkshaft.

My balancer could not move by hand. Start the car and look at the balancer from the top, see how true it spins any static, left to right or dynamic, up and down than the balancer is shot, also you may have an oil leak from the bad balancer and the added vibration like I did. Dam I'm tired I'm going to sleep. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re: Problem Diagnosis...Throwing Belts

I had that same problem when my balancer went out. I found out when I looked down at the spinning crankshaft (with the new belt on) and saw it moving in and out slightly. It almost looked like it was bent but the rubber inside there had worn to the point that it became a 2 piece crankshaft pulley (2 separate pieces).

Do you have the water pump pulley on backwards?

Miss alignment will deffinatly do that to belts. Check all of it out running and not running. Tighten the belts up some more also.

Unless he took off the water pump pulley sometime in the very near past, I don't know why this would be a problem. There would have been no reason for him to take off the pulley if he only replaced an alt. belt.

Quoting from memory, if you put the water pump pulley on backwards, it'd be hitting the frame rail.

I had this same problem when I removed my power steering pump and the inner pulley on the water pump. Just that tiny offset caused me to throw a belt after 50 miles.

Re: Problem Diagnosis...Throwing Belts

No, it won't hit the frame, at least it didn't on my car. I accidentally put it on backwards when I did a head swap in the QPR parking lot. It tossed several belts until I got a good one on there.

It is very easy to get in on backwards, one side just has a bigger offset.
