Manual Boost Controllers INFO

I didn't know this but I thought I would share the info...

I was discussing my drop in boost at the top end, with Hung at ExtremePSI. He stated that all boost controllers have a maximum that they can withstand. I'm still convinced that my flapper is blowing open prematurely. My Hallman came with the GSX when i got it. It's the older style of Hallmans that I would guess is at least 4 years old. Just MAYBE it has a lighter spring in it or the spring is just plain worn out. I guess I'll order a new MBC to eliminate this out of the equation.

Not to be a dick, but you didn't already try a different one when you were having problems holding boost? After a boost leak test thats the next thing I would do.

I have seen numerous times when you are trying to get the boost to go up to 30psi and above and it just isn't doing anything. Then you keep cranking it down and then it lets go and bam you have about 40psi from 30psi.

I would take that Hallman apart and just clean it and try it again.

Re: Manual Boost Controllers INFO

That's not a bad idea and no I don't think you're being a dick. All suggestions are helpful. What you said happened to me at the track. I made run, turned up boost, made run turned up boost, etc... and wasn't getting anything in return and then all the sudden out of nowhere I had too much boost. Best to check the inside of it before i spend money on a new one. Thanks.

I have an old Greddy Profec A but I'm in no mood to hook it up on this car. MBC's are just nicer and simple.

Clean it and if it still doesn't boost correctly than just buy a new Joe P or something. If that fails I would explore the wastegate spring idea, but I would doubt it would make you only be able to boost to 20psi once it settles. I could see if you were trying to go above 30psi or something.

I think on Shanes Eclipse we had to ad an extra wastegate spring when we were trying to get 32psi or more out of it. Until you hit that real I think your problem lies elsewhere.

Re: Manual Boost Controllers INFO

I went home for lunch and tore apart my Hallman. Impressively, it wasn't really dirty. Nothing 1 end of q-tip couldn't take care of. What was more interesting was the spring. On the boostcontroller website the light spring has like 11 loops and the heavy spring has 8 loops(heavier wire). It looks at though I have the lighter spring. I wonder how much max boost the light spring is meant for. Perhaps, i'm onto something and just need to buy the heavy spring.
