Weird noise

I have a weird humming noise coming from my engine bay. This noise is new I’ve never heard it before, I’m thinking it might be my tensioner or my harmonic balancer and maybe a pully not spinning putting drag on a belt what do you guys think?

and go easy on the color comentary that goes with the vid

Re: Weird noise

Noises are almost impossibe to diagose without actually being at the vehicle. You can try pulling the belts off 1 by 1 and narrowing it down that way.

Re: Weird noise

It could be a bunch of things. Timing belt rubbing, or it jump a tooth, and the worsat one of all bs shaft bearing falling out. Take of your belts and see if it make the noise. And check you timing.

Re: Weird noise

That noise brings back bad memory's ha. My car made a similar noise and it ended up being my oil pump committing a slow and painful suicidal death. . .http://mitsustyle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26546 the speed or hum of the noise increased as RPM's increased as well. If the noise doesn't clear, i would try and spin your oil pump pulley as the last option, see if it perhaps is that. It could be something loose like you mentioned as well.

Re: Weird noise

Sounds a ton like a bearing.

So yeah, take off belts one by one.

Re: Weird noise

The first thing that comes to mind is the power steering pump, but also the AC compressor or alternator.

Re: Weird noise

No ac so its either the timing belt or alternator belt (a pully driven by one of those belts)
And No balance shaft...so a earing didnt fall out
I could also tell you guys that the srs light come on and I was told a while back that that ment your altonator was going bad so that pully could be seizing up

Re: Weird noise

Did the good ol screwdriver to ear test today at as many points as I could an it was strongest at the alternator which im guessing is seezing (<--- spelled wrong) up, I also believe its going out because of the SRS light going on and off and the radio started going in and out right when this started to happen. So now the real question is do I go buy a new alt. and put it in in the parking lot at school or haul it home to MN and find one back home. just gotta find a car trailer now instead of renting on from uhaul

Re: Weird noise

The obvious answer would be to fix it before you take it on a road trip.

Re: Weird noise

Talk to Gabe (Laser) on DSTA, he might have some space to work on it.

You can do it on the ground with the wheel turned and the inner fender liner unbolted if you're a small guy, but it's easier to do with the front end in the air, as that pivot pin can be a pain. It'll need to come out the top, so the PS pump will have to be moved out of the way (but the lines can stay connected). Expect about an hour if it's your first time.
