Does the car vibrate like mad? That can be an off balance shaft. Happened to me, was opposite what it should have been but still was "lined up." Made the car impossible to drive aboe 2500rpms.

My car was like that when I bought it too, set to TDC and stick a screwdriver in the hole in the back of the block to check it.
The engine will rev but there is a loud vibration sound.

If you look at the back side of the engine block from underneath there is the head of a bolt that is on a flat spot. It looks out of place since it isn't holding anything on. Just take that out and stick a screw driver into the hole, it should go all the way in, if it just goes in about a half inch, the balance shaft is in backwards. This must be done with the engine at TDC of course.
But fix it right away, on mine it vibrated so bad it snapped the heads off two of the transmission bell housing bolts...not fun trying to drill and tap those holes with the engine in the car.
