Coolant backing up?

I've had my car for a year now and ever since I bought it there has been this residue of coolant that I guess backs up where the hoses are clamped. It seems like it's slowly getting worse. It backs up very slowly and just dries up and only does this on the ends where it connects to the engine, not the end that connects to the radiator, for example. What worries me is that the fresh coolant seems to be dripping onto other hoses and wires and starting to eat away at them. I have to clean it all up every few weeks. Does anyone know why this happens?

My Specs:
- 97 GSX
- stock turbo
- Boost Controller
- BOV
- Catback Exhaust
- NGK Platinum Plugs(don't know if this makes a difference)

Re: Coolant backing up?

Are you talking off the thermostat housing or the pipe coming from the water pump? Your thermostat housing might be corroded/damaged/worn to the point where you will not be able to make a seal any more.

Re: Coolant backing up?

No worse than replacing the thermostat. I'd just buy a new housing, they can't be too expensive.

Re: Coolant backing up?

If the housing is aluminum and is isnt cracked why replace it? Check to see if the rubber hose is worn out, and buy a new one with a nice clamp that can tighten pretty good.

Re: Coolant backing up?

If the outlet elbow is coroded just sand it down and clean in. It could possibly be due to an old hose (my guess is a new hose and clamp will fix your problem).

Re: Coolant backing up?

I've seen a thermostat housing on a DSM before that was all coroded. It had pits in the aluminum that looked like what happens when termites eat wood. Just make sure it's good and smooth, and that the hose is in good shape as well.
