I recently took apart a 14b that was STUCK because of a blocked oil passage.
to see what was up.
also took some pics along the way:
14b with blocked oil passages
I was also lucky enough to ever get a tour around a turbo factoryand was shown how they assemble a turbo from scratch and believe me there is no way your balance is still going to be oke once you take it apart.
in the process of creating a turbo it's balanced at almost every stage.
If the balance is just a bit off it will eat the bearings.
If your lucky it will last if you use a rebuild kit. but chances are those new bearings will wear out faster then if you would just kept the old ones in there.
On the turbo I took apart I just cleaned out the oil passages( the turbine side oil return was BLOCKED, forcing oil out into the exaust) and will see how long it lasts.. afterall it didn't cost me anything and was interesting to do.
