Tom's right though. Movies often take plot line cues from real events and popular ideas or fears that people have. It's pretty obvious in horror films if you watch a bunch spanning the last 50 years or more, you can identify exactly what some big issues of the day were.
It's not hard to imagine that other genres do the same thing. SO, why is it so hard for you, Matt, to accept that Tom was not saying, "compare the very country you're a citizen of to Russia." I think he was actually just trying to make you think.
Here's what I think he meant: the fact that anyone can see the simularity between the russians then and the US now in this movie really gets one thinking.
