When you're in that 24th gear you can go for miles upon miles but if you stop and start out again in that gear, you wouldn't have much power. Why wouldn't this idea work? Mercedes has a 7 speed auto in a couple of their new cars. But the highest and lowest gear ratios are probably pretty close to a 4 speed. Like DSM10sec said even if you geared a car to do 65mph at 1000rpm, it wouldn't be able to (unless it was a really powerful engine). I had a 94 Bronco with 32" tires and a 4 speed auto. It couldn't hold 65mph in overdrive unless it had no headwind and was on a flat road.
