I agree tow companies are usually a bunch of impotant pricks. My buddy parked his Durango R/T in a grassy ditch at a concert. It was not properly posted for no parking either. Anyway they could not get at his truck very good so they dragged it out sideway by his draw tite hitch; the part where you hook the safety chains up from a trailer. They bent the shit out of his hitch which was spendy as hell to fix. He took the tow company to court and eventually they ended up garnishing the guys wages because he refused to pay.
In the end my buddy spent more money driving around going to court and missing work that the money he recieved back was not worth it. I think they know they will have to pay but they want to make you suffer first.
That sucks about your car though, I was expecting you to say that you spent a bunch of money on some toys or peep shows, what a let down.
