You shouldnt need to listen at crazy high levels to 'trigger' the sub. The sub gets the same sound signal just is non-powered. So, you should be able to adjust the volume on the sub to make the proper sound for the frequency and the volume. The problem with a non powered sub, in my opinion, is the reciever generally dosnt have enough power going to it to really make it effective at certain frequencies.
