A/V Audio Hookup Question!

If I connect HDMI to the reciever, then HDMI to tv, no sound will play through the reciever. I thought it was dumb as shit, but then I assumed maybe thats how it's supposed to be.

So I had it setup as audio/video via HDMI to the tv from my ps3 and xbox, then the optical out to the reciever so the reciever plays whatever is coming from the tv, although the tv speaker is off lol.
