The original welding on the mani was pathetic at best. The clean up wasn't that great and to be honest it isn't really that difficult a weld to make with the right equipment. It is carbon steel so it is pretty forgiving as opposed to stainless and the design gives enough access to be able to get good penetration all the way around.
