Re: Speeding Cameras

It's been proven that if you increase the yellow light time from 3 seconds to 4-5 seconds, red light violations drop tremendously.

Re: Speeding Cameras

I got to experience these cameras first hand in Germany. We were cranking along on the autobahn and 3 cars came whipping by us (we were doing about 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, don't remember what the km's were). They were doing over 100 mph. We cranked it up and got in behind them. They started to change lanes randomly and we followed. About the 2nd lane change we realized they were changing lanes to avoid the cameras! So they probably won't stop people, just make them do erratic lane changes.

Re: Speeding Cameras

I hate this idea. People who can't drive will still cause accidents. I speed 95% of the time and I have had 0 accidents. :knock on wood: It's mostly all about driver.

Re: Speeding Cameras

I guess all things considered I'd like to see what happens if MN tries it out with the current "red light" camera already installed around the cities.

While I dont' condone the main motivation behind it (revenue) I do like the fact that it could live up to the hype of generating lots of additional funding for training and staffing in other areas of law enforcement. Anything that might get some money to help clean up the Block E area would be nice. Much of the patrol that used to roam the 94 area outside of the cities is now being used downtown to try and keep order. But it's still not enough and there doesn't seem to be money for anymore. Of course, this is speculation since I've never seen a budget for something like this.

Re: Speeding Cameras

Interesting. Too bad that was a year and a half ago and by paying the ticket myself I legally consented. I wonder if that court deal ever went through and those were proclaimed unconstitutional. I bet if they were, I'd get my 142 bucks back now!

I don't like how the gov't is making steps to control our lives for the idea of "SAFETY".

In truth, this is basically similar to the alcohol prohibition. Seat belt saves lives, no seat belt, get a fine. Bush tapping phones. And other stupid laws.

Agreed. I don't want later generations living like the duplicates in "The Island" or have society be much like "V for Vendetta." I'm all for saving some lives, just don't take away my rights (to privacy).

Re: Speeding Cameras

Jesus CVD..... well put. I agree with it 100%, for instance I hate people who don't know how to merge onto highways. If an accident occurs it's not because they're speeding it's because they're doing 35-40MPH at the end of the on ramp and I'm at risk because I'm stuck behind them trying to figure out how I'm going to merge without getting rear ended because the other drivers aren't paying attention to what's coming off the on ramp.

There's plenty of cases like that I observe every day. I try to be the most observant driver, even when listening to music. I always know who is behind me, who's in front of me and if someone is in my blind spot. A lot comes too from profiling vehicles and keeping them in the back of your mind incase there’s a sporadic driver which has saved my ass many times. I just think people don't take driving nearly as seriously as they should and in some ways aren't as aggressive as they should be (ie. doing 40MPH at the end of an on ramp or slamming on their brakes at a very early yellow light) as weird as that sounds.

Re: Speeding Cameras

Agreed. Merging is probably one of the top 3 problems with drivers here. I would say that the other two are situational awareness and lane discipline. Unfortunately NONE of those items are on the drivers test nor are they even taught most of the time.
I was on Facebook the other day and was absolutely horrified to notice there was a new group called "If I had to retake my drivers license test I'm not sure I would pass."
The test should be much more difficult, and it should need to be retaken every 4 years, along with an eye exam.
