Nook, Furniture Store Fires in St. Paul Overnight
Populary eatery-bar 'totalled'

Crews battled a pair of fires struck in St. Paul overnight, both at businesses -- one at Advanced Furniture Repair the award-winning eatery and bar the Nook.

The blaze "totaled" the popular Nook eatery on Hamline Avenue. The fire started in the early hours of Tuesday. Said the owner. He suspects a cooler malfunction started it, as most of the nearby kitchen is damaged.

No one was in the business at the time.

A pair of owners have run the Nook for nearly 10 years. They also own Ran-Ham Bowling center on the 400 block of Hamline Avenue.

The Nook has garnered multiple awards, such as "Best Neighborhood Spot" in 2009 by Minnesota Monthly, City Pages declared it the 2008 winner of "Battle of the Burgers" and "Happiest Hour."

Firefighters from St. Paul, Maplewood and Minneapolis battled the Advanced Furniture Repair blaze at 822 N. Prior Av., in the Midway area. Firefighters were called to that scene at about 3:30 a.m. No word on if the amount of damage to this

That sucks! The Nook was great because it seated very few people but had great burgers. Thankfully they also own Shamrock's which shares the exact same menu so their burgers still live.

I grew up right there, and Mom used to take us bowling down at ran-ham. Sad day indeed.

I still remember the night we went there dressed to go downtown afterward and got looked at funny.
