Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
My goal is about 300 whp, perhaps something in the late 12s, max boost intended is 18-20 psi.
Stock 1G AWD with following existing mods -
Big 16g
Evo 3 Manif
2.5 exhaust setup (homemade, not SS)
Intended mods -
650 cc FIC
2G MAF
SAFC 2
Rewire the fuel pump
Q1 - Can I get away with the stock Fuel Pump, but rewired? I'm trying to avoid fuel cut at 18 - 20 psi.
Q2 - At max 18-20 psi boost, will the stock engine (7 bolt 1G) take it, or am I pushing reliability of the engine? I drive pretty hard.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
A1: You Might be able to get away with a stock fuel pump but you should probably upgrade, atleast for insurance against blowing up your motor. And they are only like 80-90 dollars.
A2: Depends on your compression in your cylinders. You will probably be fine if you dont see more than 20. My rebuilt stock motor has seen 23 on race gas with no knock at all.

A1 - For $75 it's not worth going lean and blowing up the engine. Buy a new pump.
A2 - Running lean/knocking will kill your engine before crank walk if you run 18-20psi without a decent tune.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
I agree with you all - makes sense. I'll get the Walbro 190.
I was going to street tune the car with 2 maps on the safc 2 - one for 14 psi and one for 18 psi. THEN I was going to go on the dyno. It's cheaper that way so I have it partly tuned before I go to the dyno.
Will this work?

Usually it's a pump gas tune and a race gas tune. A 14psi tune wouldn't really be a tune...it's more like a detune.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
I would do the fuel pump just for safety sake, who knows how worn the stock one is. If you are really cheap, find a 2G or even better a 3000GT fuel pump. A new Walbro isn't that expensive though.
The chances of the 1G 7-bolt crankwalking are extremely small, maybe not any higher than the 1G 6-bolt. The 1G 7-bolt isn't the same motor as the 2G 7-bolt. The weak 7-bolt rods should handle into the 500whp range. 450 or less is no problem at all with a safe tune. It will blow up at 200whp with a bad tune.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
NO, I agree with you Shane. I'd go with a new Walbro 190. Not worth the problems otherwise. I'm coming to you for the dyno - even though it'll probably cost me more than I'd like to think! Still, I know you're damn good - so as soon as I get it street tuned a bit, I'll call for a dyno date. Can you PM me your number anyway?

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
Is there a place in town that I can get a Walbro 190 for a 1G AWD? Extreme psi sells it for 95 with free shipping but it'll take 3-4 days - I want it sooner.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
I ordered the pump for 98 bux from SLS. Brand new. thanx guys!!!
Will I blow my engine if I consistently run 20 psi or should I cut it down to 18 psi for consistent running?
Keep in mind guys - this is a 1G 7 bolt with 133k and the engine has never been opened up to change/modify/improve anything. Timing belt etc has been changed every 45k. Bolt on mods as described in the original post.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
You need to datalog and tune it to find out how much boost it can handle with your setup.

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
I was reluctant to buy a pocketlogger for the longest time.... but I can say for sure that its the best money spent on any sort of monitoring for my car. they're not even that expensive, DSMtuners has the whole thing on sale, often less than 100...Plus it helps you diagnios problems, and helps you know right were that limit is... I think every motors different... based on compression, and how clean your combustion chamber is, amoung other things... I personally got away with 16psi on my B16G with a cheap front mount on 92... but it changes with the weather what you can get away with...

Re: Fuel Pump requirements and engine maxed?
I have a datalogger cable and the software. I'll load it on my laptop tomorrow.
