Did I Mess Up My Tranny?!?

So today I went to move my car into the garage. I had my car with my Moms suv behind it pushing it(my car is broken). So we start going and it seems like the SUV is trying to car. And the car goes POP...POP...POP. I quickly look down and realize the tranny is in gear. So I SLAM my foot down on the clutch and we start moving pretty good. Now my question is what the hell was the poping sound? Im thinking maybe the splines on the clutch may have gotten Fd up. Any thoughts?

Re: Did I Mess Up My Tranny?!?

The popping noise was probably the engine turning over.

Yeah, it shouldn't be particularly dangerous to push the car while it's in gear. It's just not easy. Ever push start a car? I agree with S2Kracka. Probably engine turning over.

Engine does not have plugs in it(should have spun freely). Also when you push start a car you have the clutch in then pop it when you are going fast enough.

Re: Did I Mess Up My Tranny?!?

How about you tell us what the current situation with your car is? Whats there? Whats not? Is it partially assembled? The popping noise could still just be air going in and out of your cylinders; it'll hardly "spin freely".

Re: Did I Mess Up My Tranny?!?

The plugs are gone, the downpipe is not tight, the oil pan is not tight, everything else is hooked up. Also it wasnt really the sound of air, I cant really describe it...Kind of like gears being forced out of mesh(but not a grinding sound) just quick pops.

Re: Did I Mess Up My Tranny?!?

The engine can make a funny pop noise if it turns over with the plugs out. The air going out the plug hole sounds like a hollow "plop."

unless you could not move your car with the engine/tranny before, ie driving it, you will be fine.
